A paper bag machine turns roll or sheet paper into a tube in a single line, cuts it, folds and glues the bottom and, if required, attaches handles to produce ready-to-use bags. Depending on the model, a fully automatic line produces between 40 and 350 bags per minute. In this guide we compare the paper bag machines of Oyang, for which we are the official distributor, using the manufacturer's 2026 technical data, and summarise the criteria that help you choose the right machine for your business.
How does a paper bag machine work?
On a roll-fed paper bag machine, production is completed without manual handling once the paper enters the line. A typical sequence looks like this:
- Unwinding and tension control: The paper roll (up to Ø1500 mm with a 76 mm core on Oyang models) is fed into the line at constant tension.
- Printing (optional): An inline 2- or 4-colour flexo unit prints logos and patterns while the bags are being made.
- Tube forming: Glue is applied to the paper edge and the paper is folded into a tube.
- Cutting: The tube is cut to the bag length (cut-off length).
- Bottom forming: The bottom is folded and glued to create a square (flat) or sharp (V) bottom.
- Handle attachment: Twisted paper rope, flat paper or round rope handles are glued to the bag together with a patch.
- Collection and packing: Finished bags are counted and stacked; high-end lines also automate strapping, cartoning and palletising.

Which machine for which bag?
The first question when choosing a machine is which type of bag you will produce. Oyang's product family is organised by bag type:
| Bag type | Oyang series | Feeding | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Square bottom with twisted rope handles | 16A, TECH-18 AIA, SMART 17 | Roll | Retail shopping bags, apparel, cosmetics |
| Square bottom without handles | 16B | Roll | Bakery, fast food, takeaway |
| Round rope handles, high speed | SG300 | Roll | Large printers, high-volume orders |
| Very high volume in one size | SG600 | Roll | Single-size orders of 600,000+ bags per day |
| Sharp (V) bottom | 16C, P510 | Roll | Bakery goods, nuts, fresh produce |
| Luxury gift bags (crease-free, board) | Great 5.0, Great 4.0 | Sheet | Gift, perfume, jewellery, premium brands |

Paper bags are used across a wide range of applications: gift and luxury packaging for tobacco, spirits, premium tea and jewellery; shopping bags for apparel, cosmetics and supermarkets; food bags for bakery products, nuts, fresh fruit and vegetables and baby products; and courier and logistics packaging. As restrictions on plastic bags spread, demand for paper bags keeps growing in all of these markets.
Oyang 16A series: square bottom paper bag machine with handles
The 16A series is a fully automatic line that produces square bottom bags with or without handles from roll paper on the same machine. The twisted paper rope handle unit is available in 2HD, 3HD, 5HD and 6HD versions for different handle heights and spacings. The model number indicates the largest bag width: the A220 is for boutique-size bags, while the A560 handles large shopping bags up to 56 cm wide.

Oyang 16B series: square bottom bag machine without handles
Square bottom bags without handles are the most common type in food applications such as bakeries, fast food and takeaway. Because the 16B series has no handle unit, the line is more compact and faster: the smallest model, the B220, reaches 280 bags per minute and runs paper as thin as 45 g/m².

SG300 and SG600 for high volumes
For printers and bag makers producing very large quantities in a single size, Oyang's SG family takes speed and automation to the highest level.
- SG300: Produces round rope handle bags at 280–350 bags per minute. Runs 70–140 g/m² paper and 125–260 mm bag widths; 38.4 kW, 14 t, 17 × 4 × 3.3 m. The Siemens servo control significantly shortens size changeover time.
- SG600: A line designed for high-volume orders in one size, producing more than 600,000 bags per day. Edge gluing, tube forming, cutting, bottom forming, collection, six-sided packing and palletising are done in one pass, fully automatically. An RY800 stack-type flexo press (800 mm print width, 200 m/min) and a strapping machine can be integrated into the line.

Luxury gift bags: Great 5.0 Supreme
Premium, crease-free gift bags made of board or heavy kraft paper are produced on sheet-fed machines rather than roll-fed ones. The Great 5.0 Supreme processes 180–300 g white board and kraft paper, works with embossed and hot-foil-stamped sheets and produces 40–50 bags per minute. Size changeover takes 30 minutes, two people run the line, and the bag is completed in one pass including rope threading and knotting. Flat rope, riveted ring and centre-tie handle options are available; gluing uses water-based adhesive.

For the previous generation, see the Oyang Great 4.0 luxury gift bag machine in our catalogue.
Optional units for the line
Roll-fed square bottom lines can be extended modularly as needed:
- Inline flexo printing: With a four-colour or two-colour printing unit, bags are printed during production.
- Window cutting and film patching: An automatic window unit for food bags where the product should be visible.
- Reinforcement patch and handle hole: A patch and punching unit for die-cut handle bags.
- Double paper feeding: A double paper feeding and joining unit for two-ply bags.
- Laminating, die-cutting and film patching units and an automatic collection unit.
6 questions to choose the right paper bag machine
- Which bag type? With or without handles, square or sharp bottom, roll or sheet? This determines the series.
- What size range? The width, length and bottom width of your smallest and largest bags must fall within the model's range. The model number (A330, B460…) usually indicates the largest bag width.
- How many bags per day? Speed per minute × running time × efficiency. Example: 150 pcs/min × 60 min × 8 hours × 80% efficiency ≈ 57,600 bags per shift.
- Which paper? Weight range (e.g. 45–150 g/m² for the 16B, 180–300 g for the Great 5.0) and paper type (kraft, white kraft, coated, board).
- Printing and extra processes? Planning inline flexo, window, patch and laminating units from the start is more economical than adding them later.
- Space, power and team: Lines reach roughly 8–19 m in length and 8–40 kW in power; plan the floor space, electrical supply and number of operators in advance.

Frequently asked questions
It depends on the model and bag size. According to Oyang's figures, the sheet-fed Great 5.0 produces 40–50 bags per minute, the 16A series with handles 100–150, the 16B series without handles 150–280, the TECH-18 AIA 180–250 and the SG300 280–350. The SG600 line can produce more than 600,000 bags per day.
Yes. The 16A and AIA series produce square bottom bags with handles when the handle unit is active and without handles when it is switched off; the technical tables give separate size ranges for both modes. If you only make bags without handles, the more compact and faster 16B series is more economical.
Roll-fed Oyang machines generally run 45–150 g/m² paper (16B: 45–150, 16A: 70–140, AIA G330 and G460: 90–110 g/m²). The sheet-fed Great 5.0 for luxury bags processes 180–300 g white board and kraft paper.
Yes. A 2- or 4-colour inline flexo printing unit can be added to roll-fed lines so bags are printed during production. Rolls can also be pre-printed on separate CI or stack-type flexo presses, and the AIA series offers a digital printing option for small orders.
A square (flat) bottom bag stands on its own and has more volume; it is used for shopping, apparel and takeaway bags. A sharp (V) bottom bag uses less paper and folds flat; it is preferred for light products such as bakery goods, nuts and fresh produce. Oyang offers the 16A, 16B and AIA series for square bottoms and the 16C and P510 series for sharp bottoms.
Fully automatic roll-fed lines usually run with 1–2 operators. The manufacturer states that an inexperienced operator can learn the AIA series in 3 days and that the Great 5.0 line can be run by 2 people.
